Ishaqzaade is an interesting take on the clichéd romantic sagas Yash Raj banner is (un)famous for
Ishaqzaade treads on a very familiar romantic storyline involving the lead actress and actress belonging to rival families but its the actors in the movie and subtle twists in the story that make the movie worth watching.
Parmar (Arjun Kapoor) and Zoya (Parineeti Chopra) play the couple in Ishaqzaade and to me personally, both have performed exceptionally well given Ishaqzaade is their first movie (Well, Parineeti did have a small role in Ladies V/s Ricky Behl). Parmar is a character that is ruthless, aggressive and Arjun Kapoor has done justice to the character. There are moments in the first half where you just hate Parmar for his despicable acts. For me, that was a welcome departure from the chocolate lover boy hero in most Yash Raj movies. Arjun Kapoor has acted the part and has shown glimpses of his acting prowess.
Zoya’s character is of a head strong, care free girl and Parineeti Chopra fits in perfectly. I fell in love with her in Ladies v/s Ricky Behl as well where she played this bindass punjabi girl and she has just outdone herself in Ishaqzaade. But then again, there are a few frames in the movie where Zoya just oozes sensousness and purity we tend to love in Bollywood actresses so i won’t stereotype Parineeti Chopra. She can surely become a force to reckon with.
The story as such has nothing new to offer and it is the same old family clashes coming in between two love birds. However, there are gray undertones in the romance itself during the middle of the movie and one particular scene shocked me to a certain extent. Some might say that the movie ends on a predictable note but it’s a welcome change from the fairy tale love stories we are bombarded with. The second half of the movie does drag a bit and could have done with some editing but overall Ishaqzaade worked for me.
All said and done, don’t watch Ishaqzaade if you want to watch a trademark Yash Raj romantic movie because then you will be disappointed. Watch Ishaqzaade for the lead actors and an interesting romantic action movie.
PS: You are bound to fall in love in both Zoya and Parineeti Chopra
