Movie Review: Battleship

Battleship takes you on a ride you regret getting onto in the first place

Seldom does it happen that I watch two really really bad movies within the space of a week. First Bittoo Boss and then- Battleship. Despite the ‘OMG! I have to see the movie’ trailer, Battleship is just an awful excuse for a Sci-Fi movie. I realize that the movie is based on a children’s game but the movie story could have done with a little mature treatment.

Battleship story is about how NASA discovers an extra-terrestrial planet and tries to communicate with them. Well, one scientist warns of the repercussions of opening gates to an alien invasion (How original! How many sci-fi movies have we seen this). Turns out a communication signal is sent out and what do you know-alien ships invade the planet earth. The story then is about how Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) with a bunch of crew transforms from an outrageous, careless adult to a responsible marine hell bent on kicking the alien arse. There are then other elements like romance et all bundled into the story which are just ok.

Battleship Movie Trailer (Don’t get fooled by the trailer though)

Moving on to the actors in the movie, I really did not find too many recognizable actors except for Liam Neeson who plays Admiral Shane and boy was he royally wasted in the movie. I know the movie is about Alex Hopper and his heroics but you don’t take an actor like Liam Neeson and not give him enough screen time. Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson) is apparently forced to stay out of the action by the aliens; not a good move i say. The actress Samantha (Brooklyn Decker) is a refreshing sight and looks really really hot in the movie. There is certain Raikes too in the thick of action played relatively well by Rihanna. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) despite getting the most screen space does not really deliver or may be it was just the movie.

The movie has too many loopholes for a good sci-fi movie. Figure this: There is a freaking state-of-the art alien ship with crazy firepower but the glasses in the battleship are easily penetrable by a sniper bullet. And trust me, there are too many of those.

All said and done, Battleship is a sheer waste of money and a Sci-Fi movie lover’s nightmare. Actually, a movie lover’s nightmare!!

BookMyReviews Rating: 5/10 (I actually still think that Battleship deserved a 4/10 like i gave for Bittoo Boss but i gave an extra point for all the fireworks in the movie)

You didnt get the plot. It’s more like alien, but the alien here is humanity and aliens are the crew of Nostromo.

I think it was a mining or science ship. They had only mining equipment (explosives to crush rocks and those razor discs to grind through then). The field was unfolded to protect them from noisy humans and others that may pose a threat to the crew. As you remember they tried to act with minimal casualties of local population.

Due to loss of communication ship they couldnt call for emergency extraction and they were slaughtered by humans. Hopefuly next mission will be more successful. James Cook was eaten by aborigenes, but it didnt stop others from exploration of Southern Seas.

Thanks for your comment ZK! I surely missed out on finding out the aspect if they explained whether they were aliens or whether it was a mining or science ship. However, this does not make up for the disappoint the movie caused me as a viewer. For one,
The razor discs did create huge losses to general populous ( remember the discs going crazy and uprooting highways et all on their way). But i like your thought process and trust me it will be great if someone actually makes a movie where the next mission angle is made and the aliens actually succeed. As a movie, i expect the director/story teller to take liberty with the original storyline if it makes the movie worth watching. Battleship couldn’t hold me glued because the screenplay as well as the story treatment lacked a typical Sci-Fi flair
